Corrections (the text below is as first published)

  • 2026-10-31: The “base rate” section counted earlier one-day moves of this size at the 50 largest US companies and how many of those stocks were higher 20 sessions later. It did not compare them with the other large stocks over the same sessions, it counted several moves on the same day (such as the April 2025 sell-off) separately, and it used today’s largest companies, which are survivors. Measured against the other large stocks over the same 20 sessions, stocks after moves like these did better only about half the time, so the section said less than it seemed to. It is removed from later notes; the stock’s own earlier moves are still listed, as dates.

Advanced Micro Devices closed at $504.80 on 30 October 2026, down 10.9% from $566.42 on 29 October, its largest one-day fall since 4 February 2026. The base rate

In the daily closes we hold for the 50 largest US companies, there were 70 earlier one-day falls of 8% or more that were also at least 3 times a normal day, at 38 companies, the latest on 14 September 2026. Five sessions later the median stock was up 0.6% from its close on the day of the move; 20 sessions later it was up 6.5%, and 54 of the 70 closed above that day’s close. Advanced Micro Devices itself did this 2 times before in that period; 20 sessions after, it was down 0.4% (4 February 2026) and up 5.3% (3 April 2025). This counts what happened before, across different companies and markets; it is not a forecast.

What this note does not say

The filings do not give a reason for the share price move, and neither do we: this note puts the closes and the filings side by side. Every quarter Advanced Micro Devices has filed, each linked to its filing, is on the AMD page at /s/amd.
