What a normal day looks like

The S&P 500’s 20-day realized volatility, from daily closes to 23 October, was 9.9% a year. At that rate one standard deviation of daily movement is about ±48 points (7,623.68 × 9.9% ÷ √252). About two days in three have historically stayed inside that range; realized volatility looks back, not forward, and real markets have fatter tails than this arithmetic assumes.
